5 Steps to Selecting a Motorcycle Helmet
Step 1
Figure out how much you intend to spend on the helmet. Good motorcycle helmets can be purchased on the cheap, but they may be very basic and not offer much in the way of style. Still, they should work fine, provided you don’t try and purchase one from an unknown source, where the price seems too good to be true. After all, there’s a big difference between a helmet that’s been cheaply made and a helmet that’s just cheap.
Step 2
Decide how you want the helmet to look. If you want a motorcycle helmet in bold, solid colors, you should be able to find many available on the market, but for more specific designs, you’ll have to do some hardcore research to find where to purchase one. That may not be a problem for the avid researcher, but for many motorcycle drivers who just want to get on their bikes, sticking to something simple might be easier than attempting to track down a specific helmet design.
Step 3
Make sure it fits. You may have a normal-sized head, in which case finding a helmet that fits shouldn’t be an issue whatsoever. If you have a very small or abnormally large head, however, you may need to find a helmet that’s been designed to fit on your particular head shape. This may be extra challenging but it’s worth it, particularly because a properly fitted helmet is critical to your safety while riding your bike. If you have long or very thick hair, you also many need to find a helmet that allows you to fit both your head and hair inside (though you may need to change helmets if you ever cut/trim your hair in the near future).
Step 4
Test it out. Motorcycle helmets should be fitted properly, not just so that they stay secure on the heads of their drivers, but also to make sure that you’re comfortable wearing it. If you drive around for hours with that helmet on, that last thing you’re going to want to deal with is soreness or discomfort due to extended helmet usage.
Step 5
Change it up every so often. Just like with a pair of eyeglasses, helmets that were once cool can start to look nerdy years later. If you want to keep up with the times, simply make sure to pick out a new helmet every few years, or when someone starts to ask you if you got your helmet back in the Jurassic era.
