Get down low with new Harley Sportster

November 4, 2005

Harley-Davidson has announced a 1200cc Sportster for 2006 with a lowered seat and mid-mounted foot controls.

Harley-Davidson motorcycle development director Bill Davidson said: "The XL 1200L Sportster Low combines the specific features that our customers requested.

"It has a 1200cc black-and-chromed engine with a lower profile that stays true to the Sportster heritage of narrow, agile styling."

The XL 1200L Sportster Low's saddle is only 667mm off the tar – 46mm lower than the XL 1200R Roadster and five lower than the XL 1200C Custom.

The foot pegs are mid-mounted, the handlebars have also been moved 25mm closer to the rider and a new two-up Badlander style seat is fitted, enabling the bike to accommodate a broad range of riders, according to Harley-Davidson.

The bike has a black powder-coated 1200cc XL Evolution engine with chromed engine and air-filter covers.

All 2006 Sportsters have a new gearbox with helical gears in place of the previous straight-cut cogs for quieter running. The Motor Company says shift effort has been reduced by using thin, steel "dog rings" to change gears and it claims clutch effort has been reduced by 12 percent

The 2006 Sportster will be offered in eight colour options, including three two-tone finishes, but all with a new three-dimensional fuel tank badge.

The XL Sportster 1200L has:

  • Rubber-mounted 1200cc XL Evolution engine
  • Black powder-coated engine with chrome highlights
  • High-compression, high-flow cylinder heads
  • High-performance cams
  • Smoother, quieter transmission
  • Reduced clutch lever effort
  • 667mm high, two-up seat
  • Lowered front and rear suspension
  • Pulled-back handlebars
  • Mid-mounted foot controls
  • 17 litre fuel tank
  • Chromed laced wheels
  • Chromed staggered shorty dual exhausts
