Five new models and a host of styling and engineering updates are the highlights of a diverse line of American V-twin motorcycles from Harley-Davidson and Buell for 2006.

Leading the way is the Dyna family of performance custom motorcycles. It has been completely re-engineered for 2006 and includes a new six-speed Cruise Drive transmission and two new models: the minimalist FXDBI Street Bob and a limited-production FXDI 35th Anniversary Super Glide.

There are also new models among the Softail, Touring and VRSC families.

Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson director of product development, said: "It’s appropriate that the debut of a re-tooled FXD Dyna line coincides with the 35th anniversary of the FX Super Glide.

"That was the motorcycle that sparked the concept of a factory custom motorcycle and evolved into the FXD.

"The spirit of the Super Glide shines in every motorcycle Harley-Davidson is building for 2006."

The 2006 Harleys, the company says, "represent generations of personal enthusiasm for riding with and learning from the most demanding customers on the road".

The Dyna family has a new frame geometry, new 49mm forks and the new six-speed Cruise Drive transmission.

The limited-edition FXDI 35th Anniversary Super Glide commemorates the introduction of the original factory custom, the 1971 FX Super Glide
.

The new FXDBI Street Bob has "minimalist" styling recalling the early days of home-built customs.

The Softail line sees the reintroduction of the FLSTI Heritage Softail and the debut of a 200mm rear tyre on the FXSTI Softail Standard and FXSTBI Softail Night Train.

The Touring family includes a new FLHXI Street Glide, an "undressed" dresser. A new audio system from Harman/Kardon, Harley says, sets a new standard for the motorcycle industry.

The liquid-cooled revolution continues with the introduction of the VRSCD Night Rod.

All six models in the XL Sportster family have a smoother-shifting transmission and significantly reduced clutch effort for 2006.

There will be eight new paint colours and two-tone combinations for 2006 and Custom Vehicle Operations has created a FLHTCUSE Screamin’ Eagle Ultra Classic Electra Glide.

It has the Screamin’ Eagle 103 Stroker Twin Cam engine and an exclusive paint job, the new Harman/Kardon sound system and a host of custom accessories.

"The new Screamin’ Eagle Ultra brings a new level of performance and style to the touring scene," Harley says.

The VRSCSE2 Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod and the FLSTFSE2 Screamin’ Eagle Fat Boy round out the CVO line for 2006.

Sister company Buell has announced the XB12Ss Lightning Long, a more comfort-oriented version of the 1203cc lightning, and the XB12X Ulysses, Erik Buell's first venture into the world of adventure touring.

Corne Saayman of Harley-Davidson Sandton told motoring.co.za the new models are expected in South Africa in the first week of October 2005; prices will be announced in mid-August.
