HONDA TRX450R: It was designed specifically for racing - serious adrenalin junkies will love it. |
Honda TRX450R
December 10, 2004
The Honda TRX450R was designed to race so has a ,gutsy 450cc four-stroke, single-cylinder engine based on the award-winning CRF450 motocross bike.
Its unicam cylinder head has a single camshaft that actuates two 36mm steel intake valves directly with two 30mm steel exhaust valves operated via a forked, low-friction roller rocker-arm.
The cylinder head cover is magnesium alloy to reduce engine weight.
A 42mm Keihin butterfly-type carburetor provides light throttle effort, smooth operation and excellent rideability; it has a throttle position sensor to maintain linear response throughout the rev range.
The cast 10.5:1 compression piston has a 28.4mm piston skirt length with three rings and a nikasil bore for added durability There's a quad-type forward kickstart and a compact, internal auto decompressor for easy starting - hot or cold.
A twin-sump lubrication system separates the oil supply for the crankshaft, piston and valve train from the clutch and transmission.
This ensures a supply of cooled oil to the clutch, eliminates contamination of the engine oil by clutch and transmission swarf and reduces the required size of the oil pump while the gear-driven balancer reduces vibration and drives the water pump.
The exhaust system is all stainless steel for durability and lightness while the five-speed gearbox has ratios specifically chosen for quad use
The tubular steel frame has a removable aluminium sub-frame for easy maintenance and a one-piece, cast aluminium swingarm for maximum strength.

The front wheels have independent double-wishbone suspension with adjustable Showa shocks providing 213mm of travel; the pro-link rear suspension has an adjustable Showa piggyback shock that allows 229mm of travel.
Twin-piston callipers grab the 174mm front disc brakes via new high-pressure brake hoses and the 190mm rear disc has a solid single-piston caliper.
Light aluminium rims shod with Dunlop radials reduce unsprung weight for better traction and cornering.
