Special models mark 20 years of Gixers

November 2, 2004

Suzuki will mark the 20th anniversary of its GSX-R sports bikes next year with limited-edition anniversary models of the GSX-R600 and GSX-R750.

The original GSX-R750 was derived from an endurance racer, complete with powerful twin headlights, and when it hit the market in mid-1985 it was by far the lightest and most powerful production machine in its class.

This 79kW, 176kg, aluminium-framed, oil-cooled rocket re-defined sporting motorcycles and has been a front–runner in Production racing ever since.

The 2005 anniversary models will be finished in retro-styled blue and white, reminiscent of the classic mid-1980's Gixers – which were themselves painted to resemble the works endurance machines.

Each bike will come with a unique Anniversary Edition key and a limited-edition emblem and serial number engraved on the upper triple clamp.

The bikes will be fitted with special iridium spark plugs that last up to 30 000km, subtly tinted screens, frame sliders (in case of a crash), gold-anodised chain adjusters and blue chains to match the paint colour (no Cyril, I'm not kidding).

Both models will be fitted with what Suzuki calls "vortically grooved brake discs" (referring to the sexy curved grooves in the discs to aid cooling and water dispersal) as well as four-pot, radial-mount callipers, while the 600 will have the curved radiator that's standard on the 750.

Suzuki has sold nearly 650 000 GSX-R sports bikes worldwide since 1985..

  • Will the commemorative Gixers be available in South Africa? Suzuki SA's Steve Swanepoel said their limited number might make it impossible.

If he can get them, they'll be available in the second quarter of 2005. Prices will be decided when (and if) they land.
