2005 Yamaha R6 – it's here now!

December 3, 2004

The 2005 version of Yamaha's R6 midweight sports bike was first revealed at the Intermot motorcycle expo in Munich in September, although details were scarce at the time.

Now the bike is available in South Africa and full specifications – including the price - have been released.

Yamaha claims 92.7kW at 13 000 revs (up 2.2 from last year), accompanied by 68.5Nm of torque at 12 000rpm, thanks to re-shaped intake funnnels, revised intake ports and improved fuel injection through 40mm throttle bodies.

The bike is fitted with new 41mm fully adjustable inverted forks and 310mm diameter front disc brakes with one-piece radially mounted Sumitomo four-pot callipers.

There's also a grand prix-style radial master cylinder on the handlebars for harder braking and more accurate feedback.

The frame geometry has been revised, as have the swing-arm pivot point and swing-arm linkage, increasing wheelbase by 5mm to 1385mm while weight has been shaved again, down two kilograms to 163kg.

To go with the new front suspension the bike runs a 120/70 front tyre in place of the 120/60 of last season, necessitating a slightly shortened lower fairing and a longer side-stand.

The 2005 R6 is available now in red, blue and black/silver.

RACING RED: Somehow the R6 looks smaller in red - even though we know it's an optical illusion.

MEAN MACHINE: The R6 is also available in this severely attitudinous black and silver combination.
